Metal Preparation

Parts should be surface finished-prior to shipment to ARMOLOY for processing. Removal of excessive paint, scale, rust or corrosion by ARMOLOY may entail additional costs. Because surface dimension is not significantly increased by coating, ARMOLOY NTDC will not fill scratches, pits and dents but rather conform to them. Removal of normal oil or grease prior to coating is standard ARMOLOY procedure.

Part Submission

Customers should submit parts to be processed accompanied by instructions indicating those surfaces requiring ARMOLOY NTDC coating. Masking of individual details is available. Basis material and hardness of the part should be specified.

All parts to be shipped to ARMOLOY for processing should be properly packaged to prevent damage and corrosion. Containers adequate to obtain maximum protection during shipping should be used.


ARMOLOY is dedicated to meeting your delivery requirements. All orders are processed and shipped rapidly. Our standard turnaround time is 5-7 business days. However, if you do require a faster turnaround time then we do offer two expediting options - 24 and 72 hour. Expediting is based on availability.

Can you build up a surface with ARMOLOY on an undersized diameter or oversized internal diameter?

ARMOLOY is not a heavy build up process like hard chrome plating. Our maximum deposit is 12micron per surface.

How uniform is the coating?

The coating is very uniform; the thinner the deposit, the greater the uniformity.

Can you apply the ARMOLOY coating to an internal diameter or pocket?

We can fabricate tooling for internal coating coverage.

Can you mask off surfaces and selectively apply the ARMOLOY coating to only certain areas?

We can mask or plug most surfaces to protect them from being coated.

How hard is the ARMOLOY coating?

The ARMOLOY coating is 78 Rc, but is very thin and cannot be measured with standard hardness tests. The coating performs best when applied over a substrate that is at least 50 Rc.

What materials can you apply the ARMOLOY coating to?

ARMOLOY can be applied over all tool steels, carbon, alloy and stainless steel. It can be applied onto most non ferrous materials.

Can the ARMOLOY coating be removed?

Unlike many processes, the ARMOLOY coating can be removed to allow welding and repairs.

How can I remove or strip the ARMOLOY coating?

We do not recommend removing or stripping the ARMOLOY coating yourselves. We are equipped to remove the coating correctly and safely and dispose of the wastes generated.

Can you put the ARMOLOY coating over hard chrome?

ARMOLOY can normally be applied over hard chrome. Success is dependent on the quality of the hard chrome and its bond to the substrate beneath.

Can you apply the ARMOLOY coating over titanium nitriding or other coatings?

ARMOLOY cannot be applied over titanium nitride and other coatings. The ARMOLOY will not bond to these coatings and the coatings should be removed before attempting to apply the ARMOLOY.

What is the temperature of the ARMOLOY coating and will it cause warping, growth or softening?

ARMOLOY is a very low temperature process. The maximum temperature parts are subjected to is 70°C. This low temperature normally will not cause expansion, warping or softening.

Should I disassemble my tool before it's shipped to ARMOLOY ?

Tools, fixtures, assemblies and molds should be dismantled into component parts before shipping them to ARMOLOY . This will allow us to fixture the parts more efficiently, achieve complete coverage and greater uniformity. It also prevents our solution from becoming trapped in an assembly which could weep out later and cause damage.

How long does it take to have the ARMOLOY coating applied?

The ARMOLOY coating process itself is relatively short compared to other coating processes. The short coating cycles help prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Our unique surface preparation techniques do take longer than the chemical and electrochemical methods normally used in the coating industry.

Can you ARMOLOY coat a textured or fine-grained tool?

ARMOLOY has been used successfully to protect a variety of grained tools from premature grain wash out and erosion. The extreme thinness (as thin as 1,0 micron) of the coating mirrors the grained or textured finish and does not fill it in.

How does the ARMOLOY coating effect gloss level?

The ARMOLOY coating has proven to be beneficial in protecting the surface finish of molding components, which allows the molder to hold lower gloss levels on molded parts.
